Displacement modelling is a modelling technique in which the artists starts with a simple primitive such as a plane, sphere, or cylinder, applies UVW Mapping? to it, and then adds a displacement map? to distort the mesh.

This simple technique does not even necessarily require a 3D modelling program. For instance, the Cybermesh plugin for Adobe Photoshop allows exporting of a mesh based entirely on nothing more than a bitmap (though the meshes it outputs are very high-poly).
