Splines, also known as
Bezier Curves, are shapes created by placing points in space and connecting them with lines that may be curved in complex ways based on mathematical formulae.
Splines form the basis for procedural surfaces

NURBS, as well as being used in other forms of modelling such as
loft modelling.
