The
teapot is a complex shape that is generally associated with primitives. In the early days of 3D modelling, when raytracing was a new concept, the curvy shape of the teapot was seen as an ideal surface on which to test concepts like refraction, texture distortion, and so on. As a result, many programs to this day still include a teapot primitive for three reasons: tradition, as a bit of lightheartedness in an otherwise serious program, and the shape is still useful as a test of material and shader settings.
