The Wavefront Object format is a semi-open model format created by Alias, the company responsible for Maya. It's plain text (rather than binary) and thus easily manipulated programatically, though slightly larger in size than an equivalent binary file.

Poser uses Wavefront Objects natively, though it ignores all but a small subset of the capabilitie of the file format.
